Porphyry's use as a paving surface on campuses shows its versatility. At Stanford, it was chosen as paving for its beauty, durability, and its low maintenance. Unlike brick paving or block paving, it requires little maintenance - making it suited for institutional use and freeing up maintenance funding for other aspects of the landscape. Porphyry paving is smooth, yet textured - like block paving, yet it retains the charm of cobblestone.
