Pierscape with Porphyry? Design Teams Invited for Navy Pier

As Navy Pier approaches its 100th anniversary in 2016, there is a search underway to select a design team for the outdoor spaces.  If specified, Porphyry paving materials would be around for the 200th anniversary.  From the RFP comes this statement:

“Navy Pier is the most popular attraction in Chicago, drawing nearly nine million visitors annually. Navy Pier, Inc., the newly formed not-for-profit entrusted with the redevelopment and operation of the Pier is conducting an international search for a Design Team to reimagine the Pier’s outdoor public spaces, or Pierscape. This work at Navy Pier provides the opportunity for a Design Team to have a profound impact on one of the most important and visible public places inChicago. Teams should have representatives from landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, communication and graphic design, lighting design, art curation, engineering, and other relevant disciplines. Navy Pier invites those interested in participating in this international search for a Design Team to respond to our Request for Qualifications and Design Proposals (“RFP”). It is our hope that inspired and visionary design professionals will form well organized, talented, and experienced teams to undertake this seminal project. We encourage innovative and compelling design proposals that offer the best vision and aspiration for the Pier’s public realm.”  Design Team Portfolio and Qualifications Due October 6, 2011.

From the RFP Design Goals:

Hardscape: The various hard surfaces on the Pier may be repaved or resurfaced to further support the goals of The Centennial Vision. However, all materials must be able to accommodate significant pedestrian activity and, in some areas, service vehicles as well. Hardscape must also be able to withstand the elements. Design Teams should be mindful of the implications that the scale of Navy Pier has on the cost of improvements.

Porphyry's composition determines its high compression strength, resistance to stains, slip resistance, and high freeze/thaw ratings.  The stone is the most popular paver in Europe, and is favored for its flexibility in design, beauty, durability and low maintenance requirements. ADA Compliant Porphyry pavers are also adaptable to a permeable paving set. The stone is by far one of the most durable pavers in the world.  These materials are available from Milestone Imports.  To see the ASTM data on this material go to http://www.milestoneimports.com/installation/astm-data/
